Driveshaft help
« on: February 28, 2012, 06:12:42 PM »
Can someone help me find a 59.5" center line of U-joint to center line of U-joint? It also needs to have 1330 U-joints. I've tried looking into OEM driveshafts from different manufacturers. Ford explorer used a shaft that was 56.5" & had 1330 U's. This would be considered a rear shaft.
My yoke is a 32 spline (TH400/ST10 style) w/ 1330 U's. Remember I have the 8.8 from the Explorer.. that rear flange has a 1330 U to it.
59.5" is negotiable.. +/- 1/4" ... so for those not good at math that'd be 59.25" up to 59.75".
I've heard about the Ford Aerostar vans having aluminum shafts but can't seem to find any CL to CL dimentions. I know Long bed S trucks (2wd) can have an aluminum shaft being at about 61" CL to CL.. but it runs 1310 U's. That's 2" too long & I don't really want to go to the driveshaft place & get it cut down or have a new one made.. I'd like to find an OEM one incase it ever broke I could just go to the junkyard & get another.. Let me know if anyone finds anything.
... maybe the Aerostar or an F150 shaft will work. A crown vic's shaft is only 55.5".

i dunno about your ujoints but i found a 1310/3R conversion ujoint easily (NAPA #372). are there conversion ujoints for your application?
Sorry, I'm no help on finding driveshaft lengths.

and to clarify, only the 2nd gen longbed 2wds had the aluminum shaft. 1st gens had a 2pc steel one.
Harley's first gen longbed 2wd has been retrofitted with a 2nd gen aluminum shaft with little modification though.

possibly another option is to look for a different diff pinion flange? or a non-bolt-on style one?

-edit- aha, they do exist. not sure if this is the best price or not, just first one that came up, but they exist

There were also short aluminum s-truck driveshafts out there too.  I've got one from a ZR2 pickup and another from a random extended cab I found in the yard - both 2nd gen.  The extended cab was the rear portion of the 2 piece.  They're more along the 50-55" length, but I don't know the exact measurement off the top of my head.

If I need to run the adapter U-joints.. fine. 'm just looking for a stock OEM shaft. Mind the fact this is for the '53. S10 long bed chassis, engine set back(.. 5-6"?), I'm running a Super T10 trans & the 8.8 rear from an Exploder (flange only comes 2 ways from what I read but both are the same mounting).
I was looking at 'store bought' shafts but they were only steel/2.5"/1310 u-joints.. I was not impressed for the $180 they cost plus shipping.

I would just go aftermarket, but try a Monte Carlo or G body driveshaft. I cant remember the length of mine but I had to shorten it when I did the Turbo 400 swap.

Also, the steel aftermarket driveshafts could be lighter that an OE, and I'm sure they are more robust.

This is what I'm thinking about...

FORD F150 PICKUP 02 139" WB, A.T.; 4x4, 5.4L, 4R70W trans, exc. 7700 GVW series
FORD F150 PICKUP 03 139" WB, A.T.; 4x4, 5.4L, 4R70W trans
FORD F150 PICKUP 04 139" WB, A.T.; Heritage, 4x4, 5.4L, 4R70W trans
FORD F150 PICKUP 99-01 139" WB, A.T.; 4x4, 5.4L, 4R70W trans

It's about 55" weld to weld.. which hopefully is right around 59.5"

I would really like to avoid the $30 (which I need 2.. so $60 in u-joints) conversion u-joints needed w/ a 1310 shaft like the G body. Which I couldn't find any dimentions.. but I think I remember the Monte I had had a 52" shaft (like an S10). I also want to try & stray from the aftermarket because they're about $200 +/- & if I broke it I couldn't just go to a junkyard & get another for cheap. Thought I already said that though..

Well, measuring the yokes outside the welds on the exploders' shaft I come up w/ a +2.125/+2.125 measurement.. so, that's another 4.25 on that 55" weld-weld measurement (59.25").. seems like it should do it for me. Just want to get that CL-CL measurement nailed down to be 100% sure.

Well I ordered up an F150 shaft for $75 shipped. It's steel. I wish it were aluminum but I can always get another if it fits. They're saying it's 60" CL to CL. When I remeasured (w/ the trans yoke in & pulled out an inch) I got a measurement of 59.75". I've been told all I need is the yoke out .75" for travel so that gives me the .25" I need for a perfect fit.
The U-joints are slightly different. I think the bearing caps are .025" larger for the F150 shaft but they share the same 3.621"  outside dimentions.
