ISO/WTB Traction Bars
« on: November 24, 2012, 01:39:14 PM »
I'm looking for traction bars for an S10 suspension. I'd like a design like Caltracs. The suspension uses 3" lower springs, 3" tube 7/16-1/2" dia U-bolt for an 8.8 Ford rear (I hear dodge dakotas use a 3" spacing). Let me know.. been looking to get in touch w/ guys Bad94 & BoostedThrills but can't seem to get on to S-series forum.. since they never approved my membership from 4 years ago. Anyways... any help would be appreciated.

Tried to log onto s-series but forgot my info and don't have the email account anymore. Bad94 (Dan) is on Pro-Touring.com. If you can't get in touch PM Adam (hectorm52) over there. Kinda think they walked away from the S10 stuff but Adam may have the parts or info you need.

Also, Dan posted up a thread on s10p called "DIY traction bars" or something like that so he has an account there. I remember because everyone bitched about it. Maybe try the email attached to that account?

I got a good price from a guy out in Oregon.  $50 shipped for all the parts for my engine mounts.  About 15 plates total.

I started making them on the 25th.. about $145 in to them & I just need to fit them, weld them up, paint them & grab a few bolts.

Want to send him these plans and see what he says?  I should be able to get the round bar local, just can't find a shop to cut the flat stock.

Black pipe should work (gas pipe). I'm gonna try it out. Schedule 40 has roughly 3/16" wall thickness & it's weldable. it's roughly $18 for a 10' pipe.

I will send them over.  He uses plasma which is probably why they're inexpensive, but he has worked with me to get the best cuts out of the design.

Looking over the drawings, are the spring and U joint width correct for you?  The notes mentioned adjusting if needed.

What about the 1.25 x 3/16" flat bar?  Would you like that cut pretty too?

I'm going to reuse the stock spring mounts, that would 'cut' (pun) out about six plates and I would only have to weld four plates (two per spring mount).  If he used plasma to cut them I can clean them up with the grinder.  I'm talking to someone now about CNC laser cutting them.

If I can find the lower shock/spring mounts for the leaves I could model up the exact cuts real easy.  If you like my guy's quote I will whip it up sometime soon.  Otherwise I'm not sure what kind of CAD files another cutter would need.

Whenever you make the mounts for the OEM shock mount... from center you'd go up 3/4" & it'd use a 2" radius. That's what I did & it seems to have worked out well.

No need to estimate if I find the 3D math or part drawing for the mount.   ;)

Yeah. I just took the shock mount in my hand & made the bracket fit the contour. I have everything but the bars themselves mounted/made. Learned I needed to run stock height rear springs (unrelated issues). It just took some time to trim back the rubber eye bushings so the front brackets could ride the spring eye bolt bushing (was a 15/16" hole required). Took a flap wheel to do it.. also ground down the bushings' metal sleeve flange.

I haven't heard back from the two guys that said they would look at the plans and give me an estament.  I also talked to a buddy of mine that has been building hotrods for years and he was talking about extending the traction bar past the front spring mount and welding tabs to the frame.  That would hard mount the bar with no movement like the diagram shows.  He said he had that set up on a truck he built and didn't have any binding or suspension problems.  That would mean I would only need four basic link tabs per side.  Any thoughts about hard mounting the front link ends?
