piston engine fundamentals and engineering
« on: December 25, 2012, 12:18:28 PM »
ive been absorbing this web site for a while now, great theory for engine builders and basics/theory. the company designs and build systems for aircraft, but it all applies.

mechanical basics TOC (force, friction, fatique, cyclical fatique, fretting failure, beairings, vibration):

http://epi-eng.com/mechanical_engineering_basics/mechanical_basics_contents.htm

engine basics:

power and torque- http://epi-eng.com/piston_engine_technology/power_and_torque.htm

thermal efficiency- http://epi-eng.com/piston_engine_technology/thermal_efficiency.htm

volumtric efficiency- http://epi-eng.com/piston_engine_technology/volumetric_efficiency.htm

piston motion basics- http://epi-eng.com/piston_engine_technology/piston_motion_basics.htm

cam and valves(applies more toward reliability in aircraft, still a good read)- http://epi-eng.com/piston_engine_technology/camshaft_basics.htm

more advanced subjects:

exhaust system pressure wave tuning (very important!)- http://epi-eng.com/piston_engine_technology/exhaust_system_technology.htm

hydrodynamic bearings (the kind your rods and crank run on, interesting section on grooved main bearings)-
http://epi-eng.com/piston_engine_technology/engine_bearings.htm

BMEP- great read for those who bullshit engine numbers- http://epi-eng.com/piston_engine_technology/bmep_performance_yardstick.htm

torsional excitation (aka engine vibration)- http://epi-eng.com/piston_engine_technology/torsional_excitation_from_piston_engines.htm

metalurgy- http://epi-eng.com/piston_engine_technology/advanced_engine_materials.htm

piston engine TOC: http://epi-eng.com/piston_engine_technology/engine_technology_contents.htm
