relayed headlights / quad beam mod plug-and-play components
« on: January 28, 2014, 08:48:17 AM »
Just FYI for people looking to do this.
on my s10 i cut, spliced, soldered, but i always prefer to retain the stock wiring untouched if possible.

i was browsing ebay and found these

http://www.ebay.com/itm/251290309947
http://www.ebay.com/itm/9145-H10-9005-HB3-Wiring-Harness-Socket-Wire-Connector-Plug-/271004534582?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3f19210736&vxp=mtr

9005 (high) and 9006 (low) wiring extensions on ebay. get a pair of each for about $10 shipped.

makes it the obvious choice so i can maintain unmodified oem wiring.

now for looking through the stock blazer fuse/relay box and seeing if there are 2 open slots for 30A fuses and relays... and maybe even a diode in there....

Harley, did you look through the box before?

Those connectors still dont solve the problem of the stock wiring being just way too small. Even the wiring on new cars and trucks are justvway to small to fully benefit from the advancements in lighting technology. I bought ceramic pigtails and rewired my lights using 12 gauge wiring and relays and it was a night and day difference. I bought 4 9005 plugs so that i could run uncapped high beams for my lows without having to modify the bulbs to fit like a had been doing for years.

well the point of the purchase was to do that.
an easy cheap way to get both male and female connectors for these.

i disagree with using 9005s in low beams though. especially with my zr2 i like to try my best to not blind everyone else.

First gens don't require the quad mod, but did a full plug in relay mod on my blazer when I switched to non sealed beam headlights and wired the positive side right to the battery.

I run 9005 for low beams in both my sonoma and alero and can say that even looking directly at the headlights they do not blind you if you have them aimed correctly. The high beams on the other hand will. I have never been flashed while running only my low beams

on a lowered truck it probably isnt a big deal. my headlights might be a foot higher than yours....

I'm confused, you're using one side for the quad-mod and one side for signal?

yup, by using one side for the quad beam it allows me to "close up" the loose factory connectors.

That's actually going to work out really well.

What are you using for Diodes?

whatever i find in my various drawers. as long as it is rated for at least 12v, i dont think i have to worry about anything.

ordered some new terminals for the bulb connectors, if i did my homework right, 12077413 should be able to handle 10ga wire, and 12129493 should be able to handle 12 ga wire. but mouser is hard to navigate, and cant seem to find any great spec sheets, so i'm still kind of in a hopeful state. also the seals for this connector are all labeled as "obsolete" on mouser, so i guess im going to try to recycle the seals from the donor ebay connectors.

we'll see how this goes, but i wanted to log the part numbers here for future reference. i'll edit it later if they turn out to be wrong.

thats definitely the right part number for 10awg wire for replacing the pins on a 9005/9006 connector.
nice metripack crimpers make beautiful crimps too.

i had no problem reusing the boots from the old wires.

turned out okay, Harley showed me that there are GM sealed standalone relays and singular sealed connectors after i was all done.
oh well, this will do for now, so far i havent had any issues if i keep the skirted relays upright.

That Harley guy is a jerk...

The metripack crimpers are so nice.  I'm certainly glad for the variety I have available between my own and friends'.

updated a post earlier on to a diagram with wire lengths.
I haven't fitted it yet, but hopefully it will work out.

i did find a cheap metripack crimper.

not sure how the quality would be though. it's an option for people without access to nice ones though.
I'm also glad I have access to nice crimpers at work.

Something I always wanted to try was running 24v bulbs and one of these on a truck. It's a variable range input, fixed output. Forget all of that noise about voltage drop and restricting electrons and all that.

Same thought would work on fuel pumps.

I don't see any (non hackjob LED) 9005/9006 24v rated bulbs from a quick google search. I recall that they were a standard thing for H4 bulbs, so the first gen guys could do this pretty easy.

Edit: Forgot to mention, thats a nice looking harness, and well thought out with using the second set of factory connectors for the quad beam diodes.

interesting concept.
to add value to a 24v system, there are a lot of 24v onboard air compressors available too.

and thanks!

I have to stand partially corrected. In working on my new 91, it does not have quad beam built in, like my 88 did. I don't know if that's something someone fixed on my 88 previously, or if it's something that someone broke on my 91 previously, but I'll be having to add diodes to my headlight harness to get my high beams working in quad mode again, so I get a complete throw again. :(
