louvers.
« on: September 24, 2009, 01:49:48 PM »
hey guys. ive been looking into getting some louver style things in my hood for somewhat cleaning out stagnant air under the hood.
cowl hoods are cool, but i wanna keep it more 'low profile'
not to mention id want a big blower on top of a v8 before i put a cowl on....
but anyways, in the mean time i was thinking something like this

obviously not quite as intense, and preferably under $20.

the only oem option i know of that looks somewhat like that is the lumina z34
but then the slits go the wrong way

btw if you guys dont remember i have the noma hood now so i think itll look pretty good on the side 'bulges' near the back of the hood.

apparently a whole lot of aftermarket companies make them but they are well beyond what id want to pay for a stick-on piece.
http://www.genright.com/ProductInfo.aspx?productid=LVR1006
as far as i know there are no shops around here with any louver punches and dies.

these are pretty cool too, easy(ier) to make too, only problem is, how to stick it on the hood without making it look tacky.

just wondering if you guys had any good ideas on cheap alternatives

i suppose if you have a cutoff wheel you could cut half boxes and fold them either up or down depending on how you cut them, like this:

airflow --->
 [[[[ fold down (low profile)

]]]]] fold up (slightly raised)

its kinda getto tho

mocked it up for ya, just an idea

Second post should be cheap enough. Those are duct covers for your house...lol

I've been thinking of mounting the rad in the bed pulling air from under the truck and blocking of the grill.

Perhaps buy a set of premade louvers like this...

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1-Pair-Louvered-Panel-Rat-Rod-Hood-Project-7-louvers-ea_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp3286Q2ec0Q2em14QQhashZitem41492a950cQQitemZ280400401676QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories

Then you could trim the excess material to a nice shape with rounded corners. Cut holes in your hood. Place them upside down, and attach them with a nice rivet or fancy fastener.

I was also looking into this. My main issue is how to keep the majority of the water out of the bay.

What about side ducts? These would go better on a first gen IMO but it's an idea.

yea, those premade ones might be my best bet.

once i pull the inner fenders i dont think that will make much of a difference.
and off to the side there arent that many things i dont want wet, once i relocate stuff for pulling the fenders.

i dont think side louvers/scoops look that great on 2nd gens too

If you want fender vents, consider this if its a first gen:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Duraflex-GMC-Jimmy-GT-Concept-FENDERS-kit-body-S10-Blaz_W0QQitemZ350255631791QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMotors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories?hash=item518cdccdaf&_trksid=p4506.c0.m245

Lightweight, and has rear venting

I'm sure something similar could be procured for a 2nd gen.

I will never run glass on the street again. I'll leave it for boats and race cars. Wonder how CF stands up on the street.......

That does wonders for sucking in cold air, I fabbed up a prototype air scoop that feeds the air those scoops bring in right to my air filter, and it makes a pretty noticeable difference above 40mph

If you did that, and a small louver on the hood you'd have a great cold air intake system

If anyone is interested in the Lumina louvers, a friend of mine has at least 2 pairs sitting around.

I've always wanted a vented hood, one day I'll make it happen, I bet with no A/C, and moving the alt., you could pull a nice one off with a 4.3L

little rarer then the z34 louvers.  the gtp are pretty nice looking and would look better on a 2nd gen then the z34 ones.
