1996 4x4 Jimmy
« on: December 16, 2014, 11:16:53 AM »
Al (Blizazer) and I are getting more serious about making room out at the barn and reinvesting the money where our priorities are.  His 4WD Jimmy is up for sale.  It had a bunch of love put into it, but many other priorities came up once he got a new daily driver.  It is definitely ready for a new home and is a great truck, but needs some work.  More details on craigslist.  Tell all your friends and help us fund some expensive tools.  Asking $1300.

I'm pretty sure it is a Warn.  Al mentioned it's worth as much as the Jimmy. haha If it wasn't clear in the ad, winch is not part of the advertised price.

And a big thanks for spreading it around.

Yea i noticed it wasn't included, which was why I was interested.
Too bad it's such a nice one though. That would be out of my budget.

Thanks for posting and spreading the word guys.

The winch is a milemarker hydraulic 12k. Not exactly sure what ill do with it next, but I know I wont get top dollar with it bolted to that truck.

Theres an 8.5" 4wd offset axle on the truck and dual piston brakes up front. That could be $500 alone for the discriminating pro tourer. Plus you get some lovely lawn art leftover to display!

I was looking at one point at swapping in the 4:1 hd guts from the H3 case into this one. Its supposed to bolt together from what I recall.

We fixed a few things today and went over the truck in more detail. Ad is updated and new price reflects the improved operating condition.  If it doesn't sell before Sunday I'm guessing the rest of the body will come back together and the known issues list will be much smaller with another higher asking price.

Good! I have a pair of 200 mm sealed beam lights from the mr2 for free if that's the right size for it.

Old thread, but Al do you have pics of how you had the winch mounted?

I don't see any mounted pics in my photobucket.

I picked up a universal fit U channel that it bolted to, added some spacer blocks and fit it up underneath the frame rails in the front. That required removing the air bag sensors and the front swaybar mounts.

The winch itself did fit between the frame rails after I swaped out the gearbox levers on it from the toggle levers in the photo below to some T-handle rotating levers (second photo, not my truck). Those fit, but probably would have been obnoxious to operate often. I also had to remove the pointless wire junction box that was on top of it.

I think that today I (Harley) could and should design a better mounting bracket for it. Something that would hold 12klbs of force (not that the power steering pump was capable of that) and touch more substantial pieces of the frame.

I never did any serious pulls or offroading with that setup. The winch is still chilling in the shop waiting for me to decide whats next.

Hmm interesting.

After some hairy business up in the middle of nowhere with zero cell reception, and having to flat tow the buddy-truck out of the trails last weekend,  I have been thinking about a winch for the blazer.
I haven't really been able to think through all the pro/cons of a hydraulic vs e-winch, aside from the chance that the truck is underwater.
In which case a e-winch has a better chance at working, unless you trust a snorkel which isnt the hardest thing to fab up.

how did you decide to get this one back in the day?

I wanted to go big. Its rated at 12k lbs, which is silly in hindsight.

The hydraulic winches have a better duty cycle than electrics- an electric winch can consume energy faster than your alternator can convert it, which means you will consume the balance from your 12V battery until that's discharged low enough to drop out your fuel pump or ignition, and then you're stuck.

Hydraulics didn't have that limitation. But they do require the engine to be running, and they require a serpentine setup and power steering pump capable of providing enough pressure and flow.

I see a number of people setup electric winches on a mount that attaches to a 2" receiver, and put electric quick disconnects front and rear on their truck. That sounds pretty cool, and I think you could do the same with hydraulic with some T fittings and sealing quick disconnects. If you were super preparer, you could outfit multiple trucks in your convoy to share the same winch. One negative on that- I don't know how those receiver mounts would hold up to a high-rating winch with an angled winch line.

Being able to winch backwards would be amazing, but I think in the trails around MI, appropriate snatch blocks should be enough to do something from just the front.
Plus as you said, I don't necessarily like the idea of relying on a 2" hitch for any side pulling.

I have trouble gathering friends who want to do any offroading, so getting a winch so i can go in a single truck seems like a smart plan.

Are you interested in selling yours? (not that I've done much window shopping yet)
