steel thickness
« on: November 17, 2009, 10:30:04 PM »
im beginning to design my new mounts for my APC seats. im looking through my metal, and wondering what i should use.

each seat will have 4 L shaped brackets that are bolted to the floor. unknown height, probably under 3 inches tall.

i have at my disposal
1/4 inch angle iron
3/8 angle iron
1/8 flat stock

what will be strong enough for a seat mount? my mind automatically says to go for the 3/8, but thats severe overkill, isnt it?

Think of it this way. What you're building now is going to hold you and your seat to the floor if something goes terribly wrong. God forbid it ever does, but I'm not going to bet my ass that it doesn't.

1/8 is more then enough considering what the seat tracks and the floor pan are made of. I used 3/16 because that's what I had laying around. Artos is right but as long as you are not drilling through the floor without adding strength you are fine 1/8 or thicker. Factory only uses 20gax1x3 ovals or so stamped pieces to strengthen the floor for both seat belts and seats.
