Electric Fan Wiring Information
« on: April 17, 2010, 05:12:22 PM »
I've redone my electric fan wiring several times.  This is because when I first did it, I had no idea what I was doing. lol  So I figured I'd post this up to help yall out just incase.

The fan I am using is a Taurus 3.8L electric fan.  This is a very popular fan to use because it can pull some awesome cfm's.  It is a two speed fan but for my truck the low speed has been all I've ever needed.  The high speed draws a lot of amps, and requires some extra work to hook up.

The ignition wire is a nice Orange 12ga wire under the dash I found using a tester.

All you need is a relay (30-40amp), a thermostat controller, and a lot of 12-14ga wire and connectors.

Hayden now offers a really nice fan controller kit that would be a good purchase. It has provisions for A/C input.

relay wiring is as follows:

-30 = constant [positive (+)] power - From stud on fuse/relay box
-85 = coil ground - Grounded to fender
-86 = coil power - Coming from ignition wire under the dash The thermostat is also on this wire.  the relay doesn't get the ignition signal until the t-stat sends it
-87 = switched [positive (+)] power output - Goes to fan
-87a = not used

Here's a pic of the fan:

If you look to the right you can see a bracket I made to mount it to the top of the rad.

scrap piece of metal I had was used to make the upper rad plate.  You can pick one up from a few places if you want a nicer one.

here is the location of the relay, behind the fuse/relay box

Stud on the fuse/relay box used for the constant power.  This has a 30a fuse on it inside the box (green fuse in photo), looks nicer than using an in-line fuse.

T-stat location, easy to get to and adjust.  If you look below it, you can see where the fan is grounded to the support.

That's All Folks!

Here is my install.  I have access to tuning software free of charge, so I wired the relays into the PCM.  When I do the 5.3 swap I will be integrating the circuits into the wiring harness and using Delphi & Bosch relays that I have been picking off second gen firewalls on my junk yard trips.  I've lost one of my aftermarket relays already due to their poor water protection.

Information I used for the e fan install using the ECU as a controller:

The Fbody fans are waiting to go in. Here's a link from page one on how some dude made them fit:

Here's a link from my tuning forum on how to get the ECU to control them

The final schematic I used:

The switch turns on high, while the ECU turns on low.

When you do let me know.  I've done about everything in the book wrong on that install haha.

Here are some pics of a flex-a-lite 210 install with a Maradyne harness.  Stock upper shroud had to be cut about half way down but it fits well.

Ignore all the red/yellow wiring in this pic.  It was for the meth injection system that's gone now the S/C is out.

LT1swap.com has instructions on which pins to pull Fan1 & 2 control wires out of for the 5.3 harness
they are both ground wires.
