taking the slow outta sloooongbed
« on: July 13, 2010, 10:09:51 AM »
since im bored at work, update.

done fabbing the motors side of the engine mounts for the ls engine.
done with the triangle plate also, just gotta find a pipe to weld on and thats it.

ive basically been making replicas of the one's im borrowing from Harley.
working sucks. no time to do anything.

anyways,

that would bring the parts list up to

-5.3 with ecu and harness out of a 2000 silverado
-70% of the engine mounts
-prop valve i got out of a junkyard last weekend
-1 non-running truck with original 4l60e
-1 borrowed truck oil pan to contemplate modifications

sooo bare minimum i still have to get the vette fuel filter stuff,
figure out the oil pan issue,
actually figure out the harness,
decide on how to do exhaust... i think a temporary solution is to just flip the truck manifolds upsidedown and run without a hood
are the manifold bolt patterns a 'flippable' shape?

Flippable?  Yes.  Keep your eye on LS1tech.  I should be recieving my steel set of Camaro manifolds off there for $50+shipping.

hmmm that bolt pattern looks super easy to replicate.
only thing thatd be annoying to make one from scratch is the clearancing for the spark plugs it looks like.
when we made my friend's miata header we just drilled the holes on a 1/4" plate and cleared some material out for the exhaust and welded pipes to it.
maybe when i go to drop off the engine mounts im borrowing ill snag the truck manifolds off and see how plausible that is.
im setting my deadline for getting the engine mounts back to you before i leave for germany....
T-minus 13 days

I can grab the ones off the shelf too if you want.  Got two sets doing me nothing right now.  Camaro manifolds may better represent the packaging you will need.

awesome okay thanks.
i'll take a look. i think i only need the bolt pattern/flange shape though.

finished up the steel parts of the engine mounts last night so i can come by whenever you're around again.

now to decide on bushing material and bolt size and make a sleeve

what do you think about gusseting the frame side engine mount "tube" better?
id assume there is plenty of room for a gusset from seeing the oem style rubber mount

Shoot me a text Friday to remind me to grab those off the shelf.  Maybe we can meet up sometime Saturday.  I'll be down in Ann Arbor to play some ultimate and have lunch at my friends' place.

copied Harley's engine mounts

not the most up to date photos, as i added a gusset to the frame side tube, and painted them

i think my welds have come a long way since that battery tray back in 08

forced myself into requiring 18" wheels all around, even though in my head my original plan was to do c5 z06 front 17x9.5 wheels all around.
turns out those wheels will not clear what i just bought  :o

13.4x1.26" front rotor, 13x1" rear rotor C6 z51 brakes.

got 4 calipers, 4 rotors, all brackets minus a pair of front sliding pins, unknown brand rear brake pads with quite a bit of life left.

all for the grand price of $300.

too good a deal, and it was local so i scooped it up today.

at worst it looks like i can flip around and sell for at least double the price.

first impressions of these things.

man, these are huge.

as i was loading them into the civic.

god they are heavy.

looking at rotors.

holy shit whoever had these on the vette drove the shit outta them.

no wonder they upgraded to something else (or wrecked it lol)

the pads have worn some deep grooves into the rotors, most cross drill holes are completely plugged by the pad material.

i will definitely need to get these turned before using them, i can only hope they are not too warped.

soooo yea, new side project: make this stuff work on an s10.

....oh yea, and make more money so i can.

kore 3 billet hubs are $300+.... yech
might be turning down the stockers

For the price of the Kore3 hubs, I would get a pair of 98+ blazer drop spindles and hubs, but that's IMHO. the rebuildable is nice, the replaceable is nicer in my world, not that I can aford it.

arent the blazer drop spindles minus hubs $400?
might as well go AFX route at that point lol

we'll see. engine first, brakes second

They're like $350 a pair on Summit, if you can find a set through a forum or locally they can be had for ~250 a pair.

Low mileage OEM hubs can be had for under $50 a pop around these parts too.  That is the best price for life source I have found on them.  The aftermarket pieces don't seem to last and new OEM are $150+ each.  I've put 10k on my junkyard pair on the S10 with no problems.  One of the two I orginally picked up from Parts Galore at ~$20 IIRC was bad out of the box, so I sourced a 50k hub from a junk yard in Flint that has lots of S10 parts like this.  I have spent $90 total and from the sounds of it they are lasting as long as most.

Whenever I think about the AFX spindles and do the math I start out at about $1000 for the spindles then $1000 for the brakes I want and then another $1000 to fit the wheels.  Estimates are likely very high and you have the most pricey parts for the brakes, but it keeps me away from them for now while I finish up the rear suspension and motor.

yea, from prices i think my best option is modifying an s10 rotor into a hub.
hardest part of that is how to chuck it on a lathe, and maybe what tool to use to cut it, since turning it down all the way will take forever.
i believe new s10 rotors are roughly $100 each?

hey harley, do you have the old s10 spindle/rotor combo off your first gen? or did that go away with the race truck?
it'd be nice to be able to measure stuff up.

You might be able to rough cut it with a band saw or some other large cutter at the SAE shop.  Then smooth it out a bit with a standing belt sander before hitting the lathe.

I'm pretty sure I scrapped those on one of my runs.  I had a guy lined up to buy them for $80 once I got them off the truck, but I had the wrong phone number for him.  Didn't see the point in keeping around S10 parts I didn't have a need for (all I have are Blazer parts on my trucks) and couldn't sell.  If I move forward quickly with my plans to start a northern S10 warehouse rival I could have some more in my hands at some point in the future.

Al doesn't have any either.

found something probably worth it.
http://www.flynbye.com/catalog/c6_p2.html
Ed Miller apparently has a website now,
I shot him an email with a couple questions, depending on the material, that price seems pretty reasonable.
because brand new rotors from autozone are roughly $50 each, so $50 over a pair of new rotors to cut up seems reasonable.

That's a heck of a deal so long as they're at least OEM quality.
