Plastic seats from jegs/summit/etc
« on: July 15, 2010, 09:59:19 AM »
so from a weight&budget standpoint, i really like these plastic seats you can get at summit or jegs.
only question is, will it have enough lateral support?

just a hair over $100 shipped for a pair of these
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-G2100/

or

same price shipped for a pair of these
http://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS/555/70250/10002/-1

but both worry me they wont have enough lateral support.

this option,

$180or so shipped for a pair
http://www.polyperformance.com/shop/Turbo-Pro-Poly-Bucket-Seat-p-3133.html
looks like it might be better, but its almost double the price.

the truck has no seats in it now, (stolen for the civic) so i need to get something...
thoughts?

Al has a pair with covers collecting dust at his place.  Never used them, so no idea how they work.

They look like they'd be slippery without some sort of cover on them

those are still pretty expensive

and as long as your harness is set right, slipperiness shouldnt be too bad.

on our 09 racecar we just had a flat sheet of carbon for a seatback, and it did fine once you got cinched in with the 6pt

yah, there like butter without the cover on. my welding teacher made a desk chair out of one and with the cover on there actually really comfortable. many people have fallen asleep in it :P.

The Jegs one looks a lot more comfortable. I've sat in one from checker that looks identical to the Summit one and it felt like it needed more leg support like the Jegs one has, but I have really long legs for my height.

i have nice short legs so i dunno if that would be an issue.

as best I can remember they were adequate, but not snug. I like a chair that almost hugs you, like the C5/6 seats or sadly the scion TC seats.

Let us know, they're still not badly priced. Are they SFI rated?

It's a safety standards foundation that literally writes the rule book on safety equipment. It's used foremost by the NHRA and other drag racing associations, but I've seen it mentioned for several road racing events as well as open road racing.

http://www.sfifoundation.com/

The list of sanctioning bodies that use SFI safety regulations is here:

http://www.sfifoundation.com/member.html

Which does include the SCCA, Rally America, NASCAR, IRL, Goodguys/VRA and ARCA, which pretty much covers all Rally, Autocross, road racing and open road that I've been to. Except Targa actually.

I can only imagine they do not pass any rating system.
They mention nothing of it, and its apparently a one-size-fits-all seat anyways..

Most SFI seats are a fixed back aluminum design from what I've seen, but very few seats are SFI approved, and those that are, are typically only special order pieces from true race shops.
