Title: Orangy Blazer X
Post by: Worx on September 09, 2015, 07:37:14 PM
Been a while since I have posted here.... Some may remember that I had a 03 ZQ8 that I did a LS swap in.  Well drove it a couple years & got tired of all the little things that I had to fix & lack of room to comfortably go on a trip with the family.

Since I always liked the looks of the Blazer Xtreme,I sold the ZQ8 & got a Blazer X.....Pic of it when I got it

Its a 2004 came stock with sunroof,ZQ8 wheels,power windows,locks,cruise & dark charcoal interior.

Didnt take long to start modding it,Belltech spindles,3 inch rear lowering blocks,SS mirrors, billet grill, clear corners & a new front spoiler.

When does the LS happen?  ;D
Title: Re: Orangy Blazer X
Post by: Worx on September 10, 2015, 04:57:04 PM
As much as I would like the extra HP & the badazz sound of a V8 I am gonna stick with the 4.3 for now,as I like the quiet ride & no leaking headers to piss me off.

List of things to do....

Race seats,ZQ8 steering box,Big azz tires for the rear (probalby Corvette)  Looks like I am heading down the same road as my ZQ8...doing everything I can then finally giving in to the LS swap LOL
Title: Re: Orangy Blazer X
Post by: rentedmule on September 11, 2015, 01:13:31 PM
Shouldn't it have the ZQ8 steering box already?
Title: Re: Orangy Blazer X
Post by: Worx on September 11, 2015, 04:19:33 PM
You would think....being a Blazer Xtreme .....but no,they did not come with the ZQ8 box.
Title: Re: Orangy Blazer X
Post by: greencactus3 on September 11, 2015, 04:52:38 PM
i think the blazers never got the "zq8" rpo. they got something else. z87? or something similar i think
Title: Re: Orangy Blazer X
Post by: Worx on September 11, 2015, 07:07:11 PM
Yeah the Blazer RPO code is Z87. My truck came with Bilstein shocks & lowered front & rear suspension. No quick steering & no limited slip, kinna sucks but it is what it is & I already installed a posi & getting a ZQ8 box in a couple weeks.
Title: Re: Orangy Blazer X
Post by: RobertR13 on September 11, 2015, 10:25:39 PM
Blazers never got the ZQ8 box because of their shorter wheelbase. You have to look at it in terms of rotation per degree of steering and the shorter the wheelbase, the tighter the turn per tire angle, so less tire angle is required, so less steering input is required.
Title: Re: Orangy Blazer X
Post by: Worx on September 12, 2015, 12:54:37 PM
That makes sense...I figured because of the higher center of gravity & the increase risk of roll over.
Title: Re: Orangy Blazer X
Post by: Worx on September 17, 2015, 03:56:40 PM
I ordered the ZQ8 steering box & a flaming river steering joint, should be here by the weekend.
Title: Re: Orangy Blazer X
Post by: Worx on September 19, 2015, 04:59:15 PM
Well I got the ZQ8 box & FR steering joint & doesnt feel any different. :-X
Title: Re: Orangy Blazer X
Post by: rentedmule on September 20, 2015, 06:58:44 AM
Really? Wow, the FR u-joint made a huge difference on my truck but maybe your rag joint wasn't as bad as mine.
Title: Re: Orangy Blazer X
Post by: Worx on September 20, 2015, 10:43:35 AM
Yeah the FR made it tighter but the steering didnt change with the ZQ8 box,my old box was 3 turns lock to lock & so is the ZQ8 box.

I think it had a quick ratio all along.
Title: Re: Orangy Blazer X
Post by: Harley on September 20, 2015, 10:51:53 PM
Some of those last year trucks had some odd ball part combos.  Could any previous owner have swapped in a fast ratio at some point?  I had a similar feeling with my non-extreme 2 door when I swapped in a supposed fast ratio, but I always assumed it was just the a wrongly advertised steering bx.
Title: Re: Orangy Blazer X
Post by: RobertR13 on September 21, 2015, 03:03:36 PM
They are both 3 turns lock to lock in the box itself. That doesn't necessarily mean that it isn't much faster in the first half turn or so off center each way, which is where the biggest difference will be.
Title: Re: Orangy Blazer X
Post by: Worx on September 21, 2015, 06:33:28 PM
Doesnt feel any different than the box I had in the truck,I usually feel a difference when I do mods like tall ball joints, tubular A arms, spindles, etc

But no difference what so ever.

Post by: Worx on October 07, 2015, 08:07:26 PM
I was doing some searching & ran my VIN # on www.compnine.com (http://www.compnine.com) & my Blazer came up with code "N41" variable ratio steering & after googling that code came up that my Blazer had a "ZQ8" steering box all along.

As much as I would love to do a LS the 4.3 is gonna stay. I enjoy driving it & not working on it.  LOL

I did get some new seats & really like them.......

I'm in the market for replacing the c5 seats

They are from Cipher auto www.cipherauto.com  I got them for $315 shipped for the pair !! then got the custom seat brackets from Wedge for $200 shipped. www.wedgebrackets.com

Very pleased with both items...I had to cut the seat belt brackets off because they were hitting the console. But I just drilled a hole in the remaining bracket & fastened the seat belt with the original nut & a bolt.

The ones I got are def firm & made for smaller guys (under 210) I am 190 & 5 10 & they fit me fine, My boss is 225 & does not fit very well.

They also sit about 1.5 to 2.0 taller than stock.

Radiator was leaking so I ordered a new one along with a new water pump since it has 162,000 miles.

Installed everything & the water pump is leaking out of the weep hole...Yeaaahhhh   I get to do it again !!!

Post by: Worx on January 29, 2017, 12:32:59 PM
Its not a real tough job but yeah it sucks having to do it again.

I have another S10 project going on .......I picked up a 02 S10 ext cab stepside that was a Xtreme but has been dextremed (all the spoilers removed)
it was a nice truck at one time but has since been neglected & was for my 17 year old son.

The odo was showing 230,000 & was running kinna rough so I removed the cat & it ran a LOT better. Then it lost comp in #2 so I picked up what was  suppose to be a 128,000 JY motor but when I got it home I found that it had been rebuilt somewhere along its life cus it had updated spider inj & intake manifold gaskets as well.

I replaced oilpan gaskets, timing cover & intake gaskets,VC gaskets, everything except the main seal.....well it leaked from the rear seal so I put some Lucas oil stop leak & it actually worked !!   Dry as can be,hope it lasts a while.

Thought I would tell you about a issue I have been having....

The Blazer has had a issue where taking off from a light it would "choke up" & not run well, not missing or anything but just lack of power till about 3,000 rpm & then it would run better from there but always return at the next take off.

I was doing normal maintenence & took the Spectre air filter off to clean it & had no air cleaner on drove it up to the auto parts store to get something & it was running great again......Cleaned the filter & let it dry & did not apply oil & put it back on & bam the problem returned.

So  took the filter (spectre) off my sons truck & the problem persisted so I took the filter off & again lots of pep & a fun to drive. I put a K&N filter on & it continues to run good just like it had no filter. The other day I took some parts in & had them hydrodipped with a carbon fiber pattern & had to put the Spectre filter on cus I was cleaning the K&N & sure as crap it runs bad again.

People say there is no difference between K&N & Spectre filters but I say different.

Weird... that's something to look out for. Any thoughts on exactly what it's doing to screw with the engine?
Title: Re: Orangy Blazer X
Post by: Worx on March 02, 2017, 07:20:15 AM
My guess is air restriction.
Title: Re: Orangy Blazer X
Post by: greencactus3 on March 02, 2017, 11:35:19 AM
no, air restriction would be more noticable at higher rpms right?
i'd say a sensor is unhappy in however location it is.
some flow to the MAF is getting turbulent or something weird might be happening.
If it doesn't happen when it's in open loop (right after startup on a cold engine) that would help point to this theory
Title: Re: Orangy Blazer X
Post by: rentedmule on March 02, 2017, 12:05:43 PM
Do you have a descreened MAF sensor? Those symptoms sound like those associated with turbulent flow through the MAF. I descreened the MAF on my truck (sort of by accident) and haven't had any issues but I know some people do.
Title: Re: Orangy Blazer X
Post by: Worx on March 02, 2017, 04:49:21 PM
I have tried 3 different Spectre air filters & they all do the same thing open or closed loop.

Even my dirty ass K&N performs better than any of the Spectre filters. I have 2 different MAFs one screened & one descreened & they both perform the same.

Update..

I also had a 2-3 shift problem, sometimes it would shift just fine & other times it would go to shift to 3rd & pause then shift & other times it would go to shift & hicup & start slipping till I backed off & let it shift & then everything was good.

The other day I started to check codes & found P0101 cleared it,checked again & it was back,no check engine light but was def throwing the code quite a few times. I had a spare MAF sensor & installed that & no more codes & the 2-3 shifting is working just fine.

I never knew the MAF would F up the shifting but like Mr cactus said it was probably a bad sensor.  This MAF is old & has no screen,it shifts right again but is a litlle lagging in power at takeoff so I am gonna get a new one & see what that does.

Thanx & Welcome to the forum !!

Update....  I bought a new MAF & it runs & shifts a LOT better. The trans I think may be hurt a little but its got 164,000 miles so I will drive it & see. Thinking about a 5 speed but not sure.....
Title: Re: Orangy Blazer X
Post by: rentedmule on March 24, 2017, 12:27:39 PM
My trans seemed hurt before I put the truck away for the winter but it ended up just being a bit low on fluid from getting hot and dumping out the vent tube
Title: Re: Orangy Blazer X
Post by: Worx on March 24, 2017, 03:46:24 PM
When the trans is cold 100-160 it shifts great once it gets around 170 or so it has a "flair" when it goes to shift from 2nd to 3rd other than that it goes just fine & I am not gonna beat on it & try to make it last a while & save a little. My buddy will rebuild it for $600 when it gets time to do it.

Working on a 4.3 bulld slowly as well.

It took me a very long time to find a 2wd 5 speed parts truck but I managed to get the engine (with only 63K Kms on it)/trans/pedals/plastics/console for onlyl $500

Well I have got 171,000 on the odo & it has shut off on me twice after starting up & driving 1/4 mile.  I had to get out & relieve the fuel pressure in order to get it going again.

So yesterday I bought a Denso fuel pump & installed it.......seems to run a little better & the pump is def a LOT quieter !!

Been busy as always with the Blazer keeping it going & as always try to improve it. Biggest improvement lately is a small Kenwood amp that fit under the seat & a small  Kenwood subwoofer/amp that I put in the rear behind the spare tire carrier so it all hidden & has def improved the sound quality.

Peeled the majority of the plastidip off the body leaving the front & roof black with yellow carbon fiber wrap on the hood & tailgate as they are both silver from replacing the stock hood with a Sonoma hood & the tailgate for one with no rear wiper so it cleans up the rear.

Not sure how to post pics without going thru photobucket as I am kinna slow (old)  LOL

Also been messing around with carbon fiber wrap...... I took apart the gauge lens & wrapped the inner part & then bought a new lens off a guy on ebay & glued it back together with a hot glue gun & came out pretty good. Wrapped the steering clam shell & the light switch back & a couple other pieces. The Momo steering wheel is nothing short of amazing !!  I love driving with it.

The wrap stuff is a little intimidating at first but with heat from either a hot hair drier or in small places a bic lighter works well. Just gotta get the stuff hot so it can conform to what you are covering. I have also done the A pillar covers & the door sills down by the carpet.

I'm seeing a pattern... ha!  ;D

I'm a fan of the uncoated ZQ8's. The blacked out wheels look nice too, but they just pop so much more in original condition.

Looks great!

What's the deal with insurance and removing your airbag for the Momo wheel? I had a Momo and hub but eventually sold it because of the insurance liability. I kept the hub, it fits the Jimmy which didn't come with an airbag!
Title: Re: Orangy Blazer X
Post by: Worx on February 19, 2018, 05:14:50 PM
Yeah I go both ways on the wheels but always have gone for the sleeper look & do like how the wheels "pop" uncoated.

As far as the air bag I guess I will deal with it when it becomes a issue, they dont inspect cars here for insurance so what they dont know wont hurt them.  LOL  But will probably hurt me in the right situation.
Title: Re: Orangy Blazer X
Post by: Worx on May 23, 2018, 07:25:19 PM
Well I finally fixed my running problem.....it was the tune.   I dont know what changed but when I first got the truck I did all the normal stuff for a new to me 4.3.  New aluminum dist, complete tuneup, replaced O2s,CAI,remove cat & had a tune done by wait4me & the truck def run a lot better but over time things changed,it devoloped a nagging issue on dead stop starts where it "felt" like something was holding/pulling it back but then would shift & it then ran perfectly fine then the 2-3 shift was lazy sometimes if I wasnt in the throttle hard.

So I finally sent my stock pcm to Keith at pcmforless & couldn't believe the difference it made right off the bat & has only gotten better the more I drive it & I even heard it chirp the tires a couple times on the 1-2 shift  LOL  Raised the idle to 750 rpm & that cured the motor mount vib issue & he removed all torque mgmt. & with the idle raised the ac is much colder cus the fan is moving more air.

It has been so much fun to drive again I keep looking for reasons to go for a drive. But then the gas prices are going up again $3.30 for premium (ouch) so that slows down that fun.

On another topic I went & did my class for conceal carry now just waiting for the state to issue my license. Some people get theirs in as little as 2 weeks & some 2 months kinna weird but they do a lot of back ground checks & if any red flags come up that slows down how fast you get it.

Been a while but I am still rockin the Blazer.  New goodies....scored a set of 245/50R16 Michelin Pilot Sports for $450 shipped. Not a huge difference over the Falken's I have been using. They are awesome in the rain !!

Finally got my lower control arm bushings replaced today & new lower ball joints while the arms are out.  Went with std length Proforged lower ball joints. Really wanted to go with tall lower ball joints but they would have dropped it another half inch & really didnt want to go any lower as I scrape the front spoiler as is from time to time.

Went with Global West lower control arm bushings & would highly recommend them to anyone using stock arms.http://www.globalwest.net/1027.html  They make arms & bushings for S10s & Blazers. So that was the last thing I needed to replace on my front end & must say I thought the Blazer handled pretty good before now its really tight !!  When you turn the wheel it turns no soft ass rubber bushings anymore.

Also got a MSD digital 6A ignition box & installed it last night & it def cleaned up the running...just smoother overall feel & works good with the PCMforless tune.

I like it.  GM blacked out the A or B pillars on some of the 94s, so you know it's OK to do.
